Results from the 5th FRNY XC Meet on Saturday, November 17th. Congratulations and thank you coming!!
Living in the skyscraper shadows and vast canyons of Manhattan, one can easily forget the simple joys of cross-country running. So once a year -- usually at some point between late September and early November -- Front Runners organizes a 5K race up in Van Cortlandt Park. (Race Director Mollie Berliss and Coach Kelsey Louie is shown on the left with FRNY member Chris Stoia.) The event is very low-key and fun with racers more interested in taking in the bucolic splendor of hill and dale rather than elbowing each other to the finish. But prizes (usually gift certificates to local running stores) are given to top finishers. The club then enjoys a coffee and donut breakfast before heading back to Manhattan.
(FRNY Secretary Cenk is on the right offering some donuts to the photographer.)
This 5k course is moderately hilly.
Everyone is welcome to compete and cheer at the meet. Last year, there was a range of
participants, from high school/college cross country teams to older individual
athletes (which included NYC Marathon Champion Gary Muhrcke).
Registration is held right next to the Tortoise and Hare statue of Van Cortlandt Park. To get there, take the 1 train all the way to its last stop in the Bronx. Walk north along the park until you see the Tortoise and Hare Statue. You should see the registration table from there.
